Project for "Why I love Canada II" Cowichan Valley Arts Council

"Stand Up & Step Out"

This is a community project in which individuals of all ages will have the opportunity to produce images on canvas floor mats. These images will reflect their thoughts about their shoes and how they "stand up and step out" in those shoes in Canada. They will be offered for sale online and at the Station Street Gallery and Frame Shop once the process is complete.

Who we are

Introducing Gail Robb

Gail has always loved creating...from childhood caterpillar farms and painting on her parent's windows and walls to painting as a more sensible adult activity, on canvas that people actually like to put on their walls. Creating is fun to Gail, so any project that lets her explore something new and different and is also social she greets with enthusiasm.

She has held many jobs before and after her teaching career. Her travels include many, many visits to art galleries and famous museums. Of grandmotherly age and no grandchildren, she is inclined to let her "sense of silly sneak out" and so this project will allow her to greet people with "What are your favourite kinds of shoes or footwear? Where do they take you? What do they stand for? " and try to make some logical or fun and artistic sense of all that.

Her family tends to have very long feet and she can be heard to say, "We have a good grip on our country!". Her family has an amazing variety of shoes. Carrying us all through many different adventures, jobs, and other pursuits, footwear means an idea that was a natural 'fit', pardon the pun! Please join us in our artistic pursuit of conveying values and interests shown by our choice of footwear, all for fun and designed on canvas floor mats...soon to be seen in a location near you!

Introducing Shirley McGuinness

Professional Framer and owner of Station Street Gallery and Frame Shop, Shirley is an artist in her own right. Her expertise and enthusiasm for the arts shows in her gallery and through the artists she works with. She not only shows and sells local arts and crafts, but also helps to frame and present art for anyone.

Shirley is involved with many local activities for example the Youth Outreach Program for young artists with CVAC. With her years of experience, she will help this project shine! She is involved with many organizations and downtown business events. Her business on Station Street in the heart of downtown Duncan will be showcasing our developing efforts in this project. Stop by and inquire about how you can get involved as well!

Introducing Julie Nygaard

Born in England, Julie immigrated to Canada with her parents at a young age. Reading, dancing, skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, writing poetry...she spent her youthful years, looking for ways to express herself. With many years working in tourism and the arts, Julie has been introduced to many cultures and people which have influenced her not only in her personal life but through her art as well.

Self taught, Julie finds her expressions in the form of photography, painting and poetry. Her work is expanding now to include mixed media sculptures with things of past and present. Later this fall, Julie will be receiving her diploma for Interior Design. With the help of two incredible children with a love of the arts also, Julie will have input in regards to the youth of our community! With many years of volunteer work for many local organizations, Julie brings forth enthusiasm to bring our community together, to put our feet out there in our favourite footwear! She looks forward to hearing the stories, the footwear sagas and to find out why so many of us call Canada our home! I look forward to meeting YOU!
